Alphanumeric and Numeric Paging

The GNS can be configured to use up to 10 communications ports within a multiplexed modem pool. If one communications port is busy, the notification message will be forwarded on to the next free port within the modem pool. Any generic modem can be used. For specific modem configuration requirements, consult the manufacturer’s manuals.

Alphanumeric paging uses the TAPI protocol. When an alphanumeric page is sent, the call is sent to the alphanumeric paging company’s modem and then sent out to the pager. The GNS configuration file contains a keyword (ALPHANUMERIC_PHONE) that defines the default modem phone number. If you work with more than one alphanumeric paging company, the notification record in the GNS can override this parameter.

GNS Configuration File Keywords

The following keywords must be configured to enable alphanumeric and numeric paging notifications. See the Paging (Numeric and Alphanumeric) Keywords for more information.

Keyword Description

MODEM_PORTS

The modem port setup information for numeric and alphanumeric paging. Up to 10 COM ports can be configured. Space delimited (COM1 COM2 COM3).

MODEM_INIT

The modem initialization string for numeric and alphanumeric paging. If a modem does not support carrier detect, include the modem initialization string. Refer to the modem manufacturer’s documentation for more information about initialization strings.

ALPHANUMERIC_PHONE

The number of the alphanumeric paging company’s modem. Used as default alphanumeric pages. This number can be overridden in the GNS editor. The number can include digits for outside line access and commas for pauses, for example 9, 9, 1-800-555-1212.

ALPHANUMERIC_CONNECT_TIMEOUT

The time to wait for a connection to complete. Used with older modems that do not support Carrier Detect.
